Although Lewis Latimer is most famed for the innovative improvements he made to an existing technology, Thomas Edison’s light bulb, he always sought ways to improve on existing technologies. Lewis’ desire to improve daily living led him to “hack” simple household items to make them more efficient. He’d fit right in with today’s “DIY” and “Hacking” cultures of people assisted by the world, wide web, that are repurposing, reviving and renewing what was once discarded, in many useful and visually compelling ways. Latimer House was furnished and arranged in that same spirit by using mostly recycled and donated items. Additionally, there are art commissions of fabricated pieces meant to engage visitors as well.
